For a washing-up liquid to make the list, it must satisfy a number of key criteria:
- It must be cruelty-free – non-negotiable
- Vegan – also non-negotiable
- Biodegradable – ditto
- Recycled and recyclable packaging – almost an essential
- Tough on grease and grime – an essential, but there are varying degrees of this
- Toxic / harmful chemical-free – all contain chemicals of course, but the fewer the better
- Does it also come with a refill products – refill products can save upwards of 70% on your plastic-consumption and associated emissions
And the below 5 brands and products more or less nail every one of these criteria. That’s what make them such excellent options for washing-up at home.

Ecover Washing-Up Liquid
As one of our favourite household cleaning brands, Ecover are an absolute mainstay in our home.
The washing-up liquid is:
- Completely plant-based
- Biodegradable
- Suitable for sensitive skin
- Leaping Bunny approved
- Made in a zero waste factory
- And – thankfully – tough on grease! Otherwise it wouldn’t really be fair to include the product.
Our favourite Ecover Washing-Up Liquid is the Pink Geranium.
Whilst the main product comes in 450 or 950ml bottles, the refill packs are an essential buy to cut down your waste.
In recent times Ecover have developed a completely zero waste version of the washing-up liquid called Liquid Zero.
Made with 25% waste ingredients leftover from a beer brewing process – is there anything booze can’t do? – this fragrance-free, planet-friendly washer is top of the list.
The bottles themselves are made from 100% post-consumer recycled plastic and the cap – notoriously tricky to make from completely recycled materials – is 50% post-consumer recycled plastic.
Ecozone Washing-Up Liquid
Great for those of us with sensitive skin, Ecozone’s washing up liquid is a powerful de-greaser.
The product itself is:
- Vegan and cruelty-free (of course)
- Septic-tank safe
- Pet-friendly
- Leaping Bunny certified
- Allergy-friendly
- Wheat-free
We usually prefer a scented washing-up liquid – and Ecozone is most famous for its fragrance-free formula – and the lime is zesty and fresh. Although maybe not a personal favourite.
But we do love a proudly British company.
Method Washing-Up Liquid
Method is another that features heavily in our favourite cruelty-free cleaning products.
And with good reason. The Grapefruit version is arguably one of the best scented washing-up liquids on the market.
Its range of plant-based, biodegradable cleaners and colourful, 100% recycled packaging make them a clear winner in our eyes.
And Method’s Washing-Up Liquid is no different. It’s:
- Plant-based (vegan certified)
- 100% recycled plastic (and recyclable of course)
- Tough on grease – we use it to clean day old pans in our lazy moments
- Biodegradable
- Leaping Bunny certified
And grab the refill bag when you can to save on plastic.
Mrs. Meyer’s Clean Day
Definitely the least well-known brand on the list. And we actually only bought Mrs. Meyer’s Washing-Up Liquid when everything else was out of stock.
Sorry Mrs. Meyer!
But actually it’s an excellent backup option. And there’s a super refill pack too.
- Biodegradable (of course)
- Cruelty-free
- Plant-based
- Paraben and phthalate-free
- Recyclable packaging
And it really does last for a long-time. A tiny squirt is all you need. The only downside compared to other products is that the packaging isn’t made from recycled materials.
Although it is recyclable!
Attitude Washing Up Liquid
Attitude’s Washing Up Liquid is a cruelty-free, baby-safe formula. In fact it is the only washing up liquid on this list that prominently uses the term ‘baby-safe.’
The fragrance-free, cruelty-free, vegan formula is soft on sensitive skin, as it was developed for people with fragrance and perfume sensitivity.
- PETA approved cruelty-free
- Vegan
- Hypoallergenic
- Biodegradable and environmentally-safe
And the ingredient list has passed EWG standards for skin and environmentally-safe formula.
Faith in Nature Washing Up Liquid
Faith in Nature – another of our favourite brands – make an excellent washing-up liquid. Personally citrussy cleaning products are high up my list scent-wise.
So we always go for the Lemon Oil version.

- Completely biodegradable
- 100% recycled and recyclable
- Vegan Society approved
- Paraben and sulfate-free

Bio D Washing-Up Liquid
Bio D’s Lavender Washing-Up Liquid is an effective low foam wash that uses pure lavender oil (so it smells incredible).
It’s as good as any other liquid when it comes to cutting through tough grease and burnt on stains to roasting pans. You know the score.
- Certified cruelty-free – Leaping Bunny certified
- Certified vegan
- Harsh chemical-free – no chlorine bleaches, phosphates, synthetic perfume or petroleum-derived additives
- Biodegradable and suitable for septic tanks

Arguably the best smelling washing-up liquid on the list, we’d definitely recommend the refill pack.
