The Best Vegan & Cruelty-Free Shampoos

For too long, companies have been testing haircare products on animals to achieve lustrous locks without viable alternatives. But those days are gone. There’s a new sheriff in town and, with revolver in hand, they’re cracking down on the head and shoulders of this world.

You don’t need to choose shampoo that’s been tested on animals – or that’s bad for the environment – to get rid of dry, itchy scalp or greasy hair anymore.

Here are our favourite cruelty-free shampoos – for men, women and in bar form for the ultimate in environmental efficacy.

The Best Cruelty-Free (and Vegan) Shampoos for Damaged Hair

Tropic’s Clarifying Hair Wash

Tropic has been one of our favourite cruelty-free brands for a long time. And its Clarifying Hair Wash is a great example of why. Although we’re not sure why it isn’t just called shampoo either.

Ideally suited for sensitive and oily skin it’s packed full of amino acids – these protein building blocks help build bonds between strands, strengthening each follicle and improving blood flow – and babassu oil – which promotes a healthy scalp by restoring elasticity and strength.

  • Certified cruelty-free
  • Vegan
  • Lemon, lime, buchu leaf and mint
  • Suitable for dryer hair and damaged scalps
  • £16 for 250ml

Tropic’s Nourishing Hair Cleanser

Making a second appearance in the shampoo for damaged hair section, Tropic’s Nourishing Hair Cleanser is another amazing cruelty-free follicle replenisher.

  • Certified cruelty-free
  • Vegan
  • Lemon peel extract and peppermint oil scent
  • Suitable for all hair types
  • £18 for 250ml

We’ve already covered why Aveda is such a brilliant brand – the recyclable, recycled bottles and renewable energy manufacturing speaks for itself.

And this 94% naturally derived shampoo is genuinely luxurious. Beautifully packaged and created.

Aveda Botanical Repair Strengthening Shampoo

Aveda makes another appearance on our list – and with good reason..

Its Botanical Repair and Strengthening Shampoo is amazing at protecting and replenishing under-nourished hair. And 95% of women said their hair looked instantly healthier.

Designed to suit all hair-types to gently remove excess sebum (the oily, waxy substance that protects your skin). Aveda’s botanical-based, repairing formula gently cleanses and strengthens hair by building bonds between individual strands.

The Best Cruelty-Free (and Vegan) Dry Shampoo

Battle Green Orange Neroli Shampoo

We had to find a way to include Battle Green on our cruelty-free shampoo list. It has been a company we have watched develop with real interest over the years. Even since it only existed on Etsy.

Its Orange Neroli Dry Shampoo offers an easy and water-free way to wash your hair.

  • Certified cruelty-free
  • Vegan
  • Orange neroli scented
  • Suitable for all hair types, ideally dryer hair and scalps
  • £7.95 for 50g

Its primary ingredients – corn starch, arrowroot powder, kaolin clay, aloe vera powder and amla fruit powder – are organic, sustainably sourced and promote moisture, excess oil absorption and anti-inflammatory, anti-bacterial properties.

And £7.95 for a 50g jar is more than reasonable. Even if it seems a touch expensive, this stuff lasts.

The Best Cruelty-Free (and Vegan) Shampoo Bars

We have very recently started using shampoo bars because of their reduced impact on the environment.

We (myself particularly) were sceptical at first, but now use them religiously. And – whilst travelling is impossible at the minute – because they’re small, solid bars they’re perfect for travelling.

Faith in Nature’s Lavender Geranium Shampoo Bar

Faith in Nature’s Lavender and Geranium shampoo bar is cruelty-free, plastic-free and offers a sustainable way of reducing waste in your beauty regime.

  • £5.79
  • 85g
  • Vegan and cruelty-free
  • Paraben and sulfate-free
  • Plastic-free, recyclable, compostable packaging

The all-natural product is also paraben and sulfate-free cardboard packaging is recyclable AND compostable. And at £5.79 for 85g, it lasts significantly longer than regular shampoo.

And a definite favourite in our best vegan, cruelty-free and eco-friendly products page.

Foamie Shampoo Bars

We were first introduced to Foamie shampoo bars through one of Adelle’s cruelty-free subscription boxes and never looked back. Probably our go-to shampoo bar(s) of choice.

  • £6.90 – £9.99
  • 80g
  • Vegan and cruelty-free
  • Paraben and sulfate-free
  • 100% plastic-free – having two bottles of shampoo – on average – per bar

As we’ve tried to reduce our plastic consumption, the little steps you take cumulatively make a big difference. And we were really surprised at how lustrous and healthy our hair felt afterwards.

And the biggest selling point for us is that each scented bar has a different purpose – the Coconut Shampoo is designed for normal hair whilst the Hibiscus Shampoo is for damaged hair. Whatever your need, Foamie will be able to supply it.

Foamie also feature as one of our favourite cruelty-free haircare brands.

Aveda Nurturing Shampoo Bar

Aveda’s Nurturing Shampoo Bar is a 94% naturally derived shampoo that is created with abyssinian oil – a natural silicone alternative that nourishes hair, leaving it shiny and soft.

  • £14
  • 100g
  • Vegan and cruelty-free
  • Paraben and sulfate-free
  • 100% plastic-free
  • 100% post-consumer recycled paper carton

100% of the formula waste from the bar is donated to Clean The World Foundation. A project that recycles it into new soap bars for the WASH Education Program Hygiene Kits provided to vulnerable communities.

And it’s wonderfully scented. Full of organic lavender, ylang ylang and petit grain.

The Best Everyday Use Cruelty-Free (and Vegan) Shampoos for Men

Harry’s 2-in-1 Shampoo and Conditioner

Harry’s 2-in-1 Shampoo has been my go-to hair cleaning product for the last couple of years – primarily driven around Christmas time. Initially I was a little wary of getting shampoo for Christmas, but it’s been a brilliant stocking filler and the branding looks beautiful.

It’s definitely a gentle cleaning product and I’ve found my hair – which is relatively thick and neither dry nor greasy – reacts really well to almost daily use. Which I haven’t found with many other shampoos.

  • £8
  • 414ml
  • Certified cruelty-free
  • Vegan
  • Peppermint, eucalyptus and lavender scented
  • Suitable for all hair-types

And I have always loved rejuvenating smelling cleaning products. So the peppermint, eucalyptus and lavender hits the proverbial nail on the head. The fact it’s paraben and sulfate-free is just a nice added bonus.

Read our cruelty-free review of Harry’s here.

Faith in Nature’s Grapefruit-Orange Shampoo

Faith in Nature is always a go-to source of haircare and cleaning products because they all smell – and look – so good. And their Grapefruit Orange Shampoo is no exception.

An all-natural shampoo that is so invigorating, paraben and SLS-free and great value. And pairs brilliantly with the same scented conditioner.

  • £5.79
  • 400ml
  • Certified cruelty-free
  • Vegan
  • Orange and grapefruit scented
  • Suitable for all hair-types

If – like us – you’re looking to reduce your plastic waste, then you can also bulk buy a 5 litre refill bottle. Which is exactly what we did!

Aveda’s Pure-formance Shampoo

Aveda’s Pure-formance Shampoo is definitely the most luxurious option on the list – and if I’m being honest not something I would normally buy regularly. But receiving or giving it as a present is a very welcome treat!

  • £21
  • 300ml
  • Certified cruelty-free
  • Vegan
  • Spearmint, vetiver, lavender and other pure flower and plant essences
  • Suitable for normal – dry hair

Aveda product manufacturing is 100% wind and solar powered with 100% post-consumer recycled PET packaging. And the bigger the bottle you buy, the more eco-friendly it becomes.

A litre bottle uses up to 28% less plastic. It has a strong claim to be the most eco-friendly company on our list.

The Best Anti-Dandruff Cruelty-Free (and Vegan) Shampoos for Men

Harry’s Anti-Dandruff Shampoo

Harry’s Anti-Dandruff Shampoo fortunately isn’t a shampoo I need to use very often as I don’t tend to get dry, flaky or itchy scalps.

But the one time I needed to get rid of oily product build-up, this absolutely did the trick.

But if you do then this is perfect. The aloe vera and lavender is designed to calm and soothe your scalp and they even have a super-strength version to treat severe itchiness.

  • £8
  • 414ml
  • Certified cruelty-free
  • Vegan
  • Aloe vera and lavender scented

Another cracker from my all-time favourite cruelty-free brand.

Bulldog’s Anti-Dandruff Shampoo

Another Christmas gift that made me wonder what people really thought of my hair, Bulldog’s Anti-Dandruff Shampoo works equally as well as Harry’s.

What I love about Harry’s is the sleek product itself. It just looks so good in the bathroom.

What I love about Bulldog’s shampoo is that it is sulfate and synthetic thickener-free, all-natural fragrance and the bottle is made out of 100% post-consumer recycled plastic.

Oh and it works of course. Like I said, I’m still dandruff-free!

  • £5.50
  • 300ml
  • Certified cruelty-free
  • Vegan
  • Lemon, bergamot, peppermint, lavender and eucalyptus
